Training sessions cover a variety of topics and it is strongly recommended that current CERT members attend training whenever possible. Participants practice the skills they have learned during the course in a disaster activity.īasic CERT courses are offered based on local interest and occur on an annual basis. Participants review and are tested on all the topics covered in the course. Addresses CERT protocols for terrorist incidents. Participants learn how to provide “psychological first aid”.Ĭovers terrorism and how participants can prepare for a terrorist incident. Participants learn about search and rescue planning, size-up, search techniques, rescue techniques and rescuer safety.Īddresses the psychological impacts of a disaster on rescuers and victims. Participates also learn how to perform a head to toe assessment as well as basic first aid. Participants practice diagnosing and treating airway obstruction, bleeding control, and shock management. This unit also addresses the safe use of fire extinguishers, controlling utilities and extinguishing a small fire. Materials cover actions that participants and their families take before, during and after a disaster as well as an overview of CERT and local laws governing volunteers.Ĭovers fire chemistry, hazardous materials, fire hazards, fire suppression strategies, and reviews proper utility shut-off procedures. Topics included in the CERT Basic Course includes the following:Īddresses hazards specific to our communities. This course provides students with a broad base of emergency skills and knowledge that they can utilize in emergencies and disasters to help their families, neighbors, and communities. This is a 24-hour course broken up into three to four-hour blocks that are taught over the course of several weekends. Individuals wishing to become a part of Klamath County CERT must first complete the CERT Basic Course. CERT training covers a number of topics and is prepared for both new and experienced members. I'll be posting other "Use at your discretion" material here.Like any other professional emergency organization, CERT requires continual training to keep its members prepared for any disaster or emergency that may occur. IMO, a lot of the student manual needs re-work, and their website needs a major update, as well.
